"Twin Flame" is a multidimensional illustration project. It initially took the form of a 32-page silent book, later evolving into an animated short teaser. This project showcases my strengths in visual storytelling, warm and expressive illustration, book layout design, animation direction and production, as well as video editing.

I chose to visualize Twin Flame as a silent book because the story’s depth and emotion transcend words—allowing visuals to guide the reader through an intimate, interpretative journey. The absence of text creates space for personal connection, inviting the audience to experience the protagonist’s transformation in their own way.

Logline

When a chance encounter with a mystical flower leads a middle-aged desperate man to a profound spiritual connection, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, only to find themselves reunited with the flower, igniting a bond that transcends time and space.

About Animation

To further expand this narrative, I created a short animation that captures the essence of the first half of the story. This animation adopts a stream-of-consciousness approach, weaving together fluid transformations, layered animations at varying speeds, and dynamic perspective shifts. Through these techniques, I aimed to evoke a dreamlike, immersive experience that reflects the protagonist’s evolving connection with the mystical flower.

About Theme & Concept

Last year, coincidentally I was told a subtle concept called “twin flame”, which describes a deep, intense connection between two individuals who are considered to be two halves of the same soul. Traditionally, these two are human beings. What about a human and a natural soul? This was coming from my head at that time. Actually, many people experience deep emotions and a sense of peace, love, or awe when interacting with nature. This bond can be seen as a form of spiritual or emotional connection, reflecting the person’s appreciation for the beauty and life force present in nature.

Thus, I wrote a story about the profound bond between a human and a flower.

When a despondent man, recently fired and struggling to find meaning in life, wandered into a flower shop, he discovered a small, solitary pot of chamomile. When he encountered the flower, color returned to his life while the flower found a sense of belonging. Their souls became connected. Afterward, they experienced separation and union. They two became better individuals.

About Character

In my story, the protagonist is a man who feels lost and disillusioned with life. Recently fired and unable to find meaning in his day-to-day existence, he is emotionally numb. He stumbles into a flower shop, wandering aimlessly as he tries to make sense of his life. There, he discovers a small, solitary pot of chamomile—a delicate flower that immediately stands out to him for reasons he can’t quite explain. At this moment, something shifts within him. The flower is not simply a plant in his eyes, but a symbol of hope. As he gazes at it, he begins to feel that color and warmth are slowly returning to his life. What was once bleak and empty begins to fill with new meaning.

The chamomile, in my story, becomes more than a flower. It symbolizes life, renewal, and the power of connection. While the man is suffering from the monotony and despair of modern life, the flower has been abandoned and left alone, waiting for someone to care for it. Together, they embark on a journey of healing and self-discovery. The flower provides the man with a quiet form of companionship and hope, while the man offers the flower the care and attention it craves. Their bond is not romantic, nor is it the usual interpretation of twin flames. It’s about mutual growth. As the story progresses, the two experience both separation and reunion. At one point, the man’s cat destroys the flower, forcing the man to part ways with it. This moment of loss is significant because it shows that even in separation, their connection remains. They are still intertwined, even if they are no longer physically together.

I chose a flower specifically because of its fragility and fleeting nature. Flowers don’t last forever, yet in their short lives, they bring beauty, color, and life into the world. This mirrors the human experience—our lives are finite, but the connections we make can leave a lasting impact. In many ways, the man’s journey with the flower is a reminder that even the most ephemeral things can carry deep meaning.

I met this guys when I walked around the City Hall in Seoul last year. It was a rainy day. He didn’t use an umbrella, which quite stood out for me. From head to toe, A look at his outfit and accessory gave me an electric shock that he should be a character of a story because he has a contradictory feeling. Thus, when I weaved the new story, he naturally became my protagonist😆
