Off Work is an art and music project initiated by Handowin in collaboration with independent musician Rhythmix_shun. The Off Work concept was created in 2021. At the time, my music partner Shun had produced a collection of untitled city pop tracks. Since international travel was impossible during the pandemic, we wanted to create something lighthearted and escapist. That led to the idea: What if Off Work on Mondays?

Inspired by the nostalgic, Japanese-influenced lo-fi sound of the music, I immediately imagined the seaside in Kamakura. From that image, the first series under the Off Work concept gradually took shape: Off Work Everyday—a visual celebration of slowing down, escaping routine, and embracing the simple joy of everyday life. The purpose of this project was to provide relaxation and cheer to those who felt frustrated, anxious, or helpless during the pandemic.

So far we have finished four series:

Off Work Everyday: This series comprises eight digital albums - representing the seven days of the week plus one bonus day. The illustration concept revolves around the fusion of two parallel universes. The background visuals depict real landscapes in Japan, while the panels unveil related fleeting moments. Subtle elements are strategically placed to bridge these two visuals. Drawing scenes from my past visits to Japan evokes a sense of nostalgia. Ultimately, my aim with this series is to offer enjoyment through art and music. Let's stay relaxed, embrace happiness, and live free from anxiety and insomnia.

Off Work Every Month: Collaborating with 12 friends residing in 12 different cities across China, each friend recommends their favorite spot in their respective cities.
The illustrations depict the beloved places, while the animations capture the small, meaningful moments they've experienced over the past year.
For those unable to travel around China, join us as we virtually explore snowy palaces, enjoy a cup of tea in the park, savor an omelet at a café, feel the ocean waves at sunset, and breathe in the salty air. Experience the love and warmth of these cherished moments with us.

Off Work in Four Seasons: This is the third series under the "Off Work" music & illustration project. Through four cities in four different countries-Rome (Italy), Changsha (China), Boston (USA), and Reykjavik(Iceland)-the series captures each city in its most iconic season: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. These illustrations convey the signature sense of ease, comfort, and relaxation at the heart of the Off Work theme, offering a moment of healing and calm to busy urban dwellers. To accompany the visual series, four seasonal and city-inspired City Pop albums will also be released online. Then I also developed the bookstore chapter for each city and season, respectively.
