The Shanghai’s City of Books (上海书城） carries the cultural memory of the city, showcasing a beautiful life. In order to preserve this unique presence, the book city will undergo internal functional upgrades as well as transformations to its exterior facade. In December 2021, the Shanghai Book City Fuzhou Road Store announced its renovation. Now, after nearly two years of being away, this 'new city' constructed with books is about to make a comeback with a completely new appearance.

In July 2024, the Shanghai’s City of Books will establish a new bookstore in Kashi, Xinjiang, named "Jiangnan Bookstore." For the grand opening, an illustration will be created as the main visual, which will also serve as the main artwork for the opening gift. The illustration captures the essence of both Shanghai and Kashi, using the concept of doors as a theme. Three types of doors are depicted, gradually extending with the perspective: the carved doors of ordinary Kashi residents, the Shikumen of Shanghai, and the ancient city gate of Kashi In the foreground, an open book symbolizes the beginning of a new chapter, inviting us into this culturally intertwined world. The elements in the illustration include the white magnolia, the city flower of Shanghai, landmarks in Pudong, Shanghai snacks, the ancient cityscape of Kashi, pomegranate flowers, handcrafted art, and local delicacies.
