The 2025 Peking Opera Cultural Season · Creative Illustration Exhibition Call for Entries serves as an important initiative to promote the transformation of Peking Opera IP and facilitate its industrial development. Relying on Beijing’s resources as the national cultural center, the event uses illustration — a modern art form — as a medium to revitalize the beauty of Peking Opera and promote its contemporary dissemination and youthful expression.

The following three artworks were created for “The Gathering of Heros” 《群英会》

01. Zhou Yu dancing with a sword while drunk

It takes the scene of Sun Yu drunkenly dancing with a sword as the visual focus. It incorporates the phoenix crown worn by Sun Yu, forming a circular composition. Combined with decorative patterns inspired by traditional Peking opera stage design, the overall layout achieves a balanced, symmetrical structure.

02. A group of characters (Sheng, Jing, and Chou)

(Up) It is designed in a horizontal poster format. As the title Heroes Gathering suggests, it brings together a wide range of Peking opera roles — sheng, jing, and chou. The work emphasizes the distinctive characteristics of each character, from their makeup and costumes to their gestures and expressions.

(Right) It is designed in a vertical poster format. It depicts one of the most significant scenes from Heroes Gathering — “Borrowing Arrows with Straw Boats.” The contrast between the realistic battle scene and the stylized Peking opera stage creates a striking juxtaposition, heightening the overall intensity and drama of the atmosphere.
