Silk Scarf - Artist Collaboration
I recently collaborated with my long-term client, Xinhua Media, on a new silk scarf design inspired by the theme of Kashi’s ethnic minority costumes.
Based on extensive research into the ethnic cultures and traditional clothing of the Kashgar region, I finally developed a visual concept featuring the costumes of five ethnic groups: Uyghur, Uzbek, Tajik, Kazakh, and Kyrgyz.
The central composition is inspired by the unfolded pattern of a Uyghur doppa (traditional embroidered cap), while the four corners showcase the iconic headwear of the other four ethnic groups. Every decorative motif and ornamental pattern is derived from their unique cultural symbols and traditional totems.
Within the composition, the illustration portrays the human stories and everyday lives of these five ethnic groups, each wearing their distinctive traditional costumes and celebrating the rich cultural diversity of Kashgar.
The composition is built around the geometric form of a top-view Uyghur doppa, with the four corners featuring iconic hats from four other ethnic groups. The border incorporates their traditional motifs, while the center depicts the daily lives and cultural expressions of all five ethnic communities through figures wearing their distinctive traditional costumes.
Inspired by Kashgar’s landscapes and the warm hospitality of Xinjiang, the palette combines vibrant reds, oranges, magentas, and yellows with bright turquoise, blue-green, and purple tones. Golden outlines add richness and elegance, creating a lively visual language that reflects the passion, diversity, and colorful traditions of Xinjiang’s ethnic cultures.
T he patterns and textures in the illustration are inspired by the distinctive traditional motifs and cultural totems of the ethnic groups.
The four hats placed in the corners of the illustration represent the traditional headwear of different ethnic groups: the Kazakh women’s headdress “Takya,” the Kyrgyz men’s white felt hat “Kalpak,” the Uzbek embroidered doppa, and the Tajik “Kuletta” hat.
