Traveling empowers me to absorb the magical;
Walking enables me to discover the unknown.
Tokyo is the only one of the cities which constantly inspires me.
What is Omikuji?
Every time when I go to Tokyo, Asakusa is my top-of-mind place to stay. And Sensoji Temple becomes the most familiar spot for me. This project is regarding their popular Omikuji. It is always said: Try on one Omikuji paper fortune, take only good luck with you.
Omikujis are random fortunes written on strips of paper at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan. Literally "sacred lot", these are usually received by making a small offering (generally a five-yen coin as it is considered good luck) and randomly choosing one from a box, hoping for the resulting fortune to be good (wikipedia.com).
There are 100 different fortunes here. Based on my understanding, I attempt to visualize one fortune into a tarot-card-like artwork. The style of each card varies from each other - specifically, some of them appear abstract while others lead towards realistic paintings. Besides, my unique coloring expression is inclined to not only avoid excessive attention paid to the bad luck one picks up but also bring everyone into a fantastic world.
By virtue of this project, I attended a few gallery shows.
